How to Build More Muscle by Training Less

I’ve been experimenting lately with the idea that I could gain more muscle by exercising less and that overtraining is easier to do, and a lot more commonly done, than typically realized.  There are certain days when I feel very strong, energetic and rested and on these days I used to push myself harder to take advantage of my surplus strength.

I would typically do this by squeezing out another couple of sets or doing an exercise that I’ve only rarely or never done on the muscles I’m trying to work extra hard.  On a day like this I would often do eight to twelve sets of exercises on the same muscle group.  As an experimental change of pace, for a few months I’ve been limiting myself to four to six sets of exercises on a single muscle group just to see what would happen.

Well, so much for the theory of greater gains with less effort.  For me it’s no longer a theory.
